We spent all last week exploring and creating using a snowman theme at our snowman tot school! We also featured snowmen for our little preschool last week!
Today I am excited to share one of the simple (and active) ways that we had fun with snowmen last week. We did a simple snowman toss game!
Our snowman toss game was a fun way to work on hand-eye coordination and build gross motor and fine motor skills. We also embedded a little counting into the activity and talked about sizes!
To get started you only need a few materials...
Materials Needed:
- posterboard or heavy card
- scissors
- markers
- white paper scraps
- black cardstock
- painters tape
- pencil
Before you can get started playing you need to make your little snowman! I made this snowman ahead of time before our little preschool got started.
To make:
Start by drawing a snowman on posterboard with pencil and then cut it out.
Next cut out the center of the snowman to create a hole where the kids can toss the snowballs.
After that, use marker to add features like eyes, a carrot nose, and a mouth.
Lastly, cut out a black top hat and add it on top with tape or glue.
Secure the snowman in place with some sturdy painters tape up high in a doorway or even stuck to te side of a table.
Once your snowman is made, have the kids gather together and scrunch up paper scraps to make snowballs of all different sizes.
I loved how big some of the snowballs turned out.
To play:
Playing the game was the easiest part! The kids took turns sitting along the wall while each friend got a chance to toss an entire round of snowballs throught the snowman hole. Then they rotated to the next kid. I actually thought the snowman would be too high for the kids (who are 3-4) but they surprised me with their determination to launch those snowballs!
After each turn the child picked up all the snowballs and counted how many he/she got through the snowman.
This game was seriously so fun and simple. I also thought that the kids would hit down our snowman, but it stayed up. Hooray!
In addition to playing our snowman game we also read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.
