Tissue Paper Mitten Sun Catcher

My fabulous friend Kathren passed along this idea to me the other morning and we just had to do it right then. It made me laugh that we were making mittens when it has been 60+ degrees here in California... but oh well!

I love making sun catchers. They are beautiful. This craft is a great alternative to crayon sun catchers and practices scissor skills as well.

Materials Needed: variety of colored tissue paper, scissors, contact paper, markers, construction paper, tape, and ribbon/string.

Directions:

1. Cut lots of little pieces of tissue paper. I cut the paper in strips and then my son snipped them into little pieces.

2. Trace around your child's hands onto the contact paper (smooth side) using a sharpie. Make it look like they are mittens shaped like your child's hands.

3. Tape the contact paper sticky side out to a table or wall (somewhere that is easy to access/work with). 

4. Start adding the tissue paper pieces onto the contact paper inside the mittens.

5. Add another piece of contact paper on top of your tissue paper to seal it in (sticky side down).

6. Use your markers (sharpies are our favorites) to outline the edges and make them a little thicker.

7. Cut the mittens out and add a hole punch at the top.

7. Add a little piece of string/ribbon through a hole at the top or bottom of your mittens and then hang them up in front of a window and watch the sun stream through them.

We are loving how these turned out! I was also excited to discover that my son is studying Jan Brett's book The Mitten this week, so this craft project came at the perfect time.
