Button Snowman Craft

During the winter where we live, snowmen crafts are the closest we'll get to real snow unless we go up to Tahoe. Over the holidays I ordered a giant bucket of buttons, so they are our current favorite crafting tool. A friend came over the other day and was asking to do an art project, so we decided to make a button snowman craft.

Materials Needed: White cardstock, scrap paper, crayons, scissors, glue, buttons, googly eyes, ribbon, and any other fun embellishments (we used little sticky jewels).

Directions:

This was a pretty open-ended project. I didn't show the kids a finished project, but they knew they were making snowmen. I helped my toddler with cutting out her snowman and hat and adding some glue where she wanted it, but then I just let her and her little preschool friend build their snowmen how they wanted. The preschooler even cut out his own snowman.

During this activity we had fun talking about the different sizes and colors of the buttons and about our sparkly and bumpy jewels. Next time I do this I will probably grab a little more variety of materials to create with or have them go outside on a twig hunt so that their projects have even more texture.

After doing this craft we sang "Once there was a snowman" and did some actions with our bodies to grow tall and melt to the ground.

Once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman,

Once there was a snowman, tall, tall, tall.

In the sun he melted, melted, melted.

In the sun he melted, small, small, small.

We also watched this variation on the song because it totally cracks me up.

During lunch we read Frosty's New Friends by Richard Cowdery. This story is about a fun afternoon some friends have together playing in the snow when Frosty comes back into town. It isn't my favorite book, but the kids like the illustrations and simple story.
