My kids love cars... and so do I. We have quite a collection of different types of toy cars and we love doing car themed activities too.
This month we got a chance to try out these darling wooden cars from the Little Adventure etsy shop. We are excited to share a bit about the cars with you AND share the cool ramp science activities we created. We also have a giveaway, so make sure to scroll down!
Little Adventure sent us their organic car set made with walnut and cherry woods to try out last month.
My toddler immediately fell in love with the cars and his older siblings did too.
The cars are the perfect size for kids and the cut out windows make them easy to hold on to. I also loved how the set comes with a car in each color. That has totally minimized fighting with my kids since it is easy to tell which color belongs to who.
The cars are also very durable. My kids have been trying to destroy them ever since they arrived (can't help themselves) and even with dropping and banging and falling, the cars still look beautiful! My kids also love to smash the cars together again and again. I am impressed they aren't broken yet!
I also love how each car is sanded smooth with an organic beeswax and olive oil finish, making it safe for your child!
Once we got our new cars we wanted to test them in some unique ways. We decided to explore car ramps and make several ramps using different materials we had around the house.
Car ramps can help teach kids the basics about forces in motion. We started off by brainstorming all of the items we had in the house that we could make ramps with.
Here's our list...
- blocks
- lids
- cardboard
- boxes
- poster board
- books
- pillow cushions
Next we talked about each type of ramp and we made simple predictions about which would cause the cars to go faster, slower, further, shorter, etc.
After we gathered up all of the materials we needed, plus some painter's tape, we were ready to get to work creating!!
First we set up ramps with books, cardboard, poster board, and lids. Then we tried out the cars on each type of ramp and we wrote down what we learned. We also used painters tape to mark distances on the floor so we could figure out which car went the furthest/fastest.
Here are a few of the ramps we set up...
Car ramp with books
Car ramp with a large lid and painters tape stuck to a chair
Car ramp with a piece of poster board
holding it higher or lower determines how far the car goes
Car ramp with a big piece of cardboard held up by blocks
We plan to keep creating different ramp options since we really enjoy figuring out new ways to get cars flying across our playroom. It was cool to test out each of the ramps and measure how far the cars went, what happened when the incline was too steep or too shallow, and just explore and play.
Before we did each test we tried to hypothesize and decide what we thought would happen. The kids really enjoyed seeing the difference between what they thought would happen and what would actually happen. Sometimes they guessed right too!
Next we plan to try to make ramps from pool noodles, baking pans, couch cushions, and broken boxes.
Have you made ramps with your kids? What has been successful? Which ones traveled the fastest?
