15+ Creative Ways to Paint with Toddlers

Do you love painting with toddlers, or hate it?

I haven't always been a fan, but a few years ago I started exploring different creative ways to paint, and now painting is one of my favorite things to do with toddlers.

Reasons I love painting with toddlers

The sensory experience is so fun and it is such a great way to help them explore new textures and colors.
I love watching toddlers paint their bodies and just giggle.
There are even mess-free ways to paint! Some kids hate the feeling of paint or have to get washed the second paint touches them, so I also am always looking for mess-free painting ideas.

Why is painting good for toddlers?

"Painting is a way for children to do many important things: convey ideas, express emotion, use their senses, explore color, explore process and outcomes, and create aesthetically pleasing works and experiences." - Penn State University

Painting can also provide a great opportunity for connection and conversation. I like to talk with kids about their art while they are creating and/or afterwards. Some kids need full attention on their art and won't want to talk while they create, and others will want to share. It is important to be aware and find out what works for each kid.

Why 15+ ways to paint?

We've probably painted using 50 different methods/materials, but today I'm going to share just 15 of my favorites. As I find other favorite ones, I'll add them to this list... which is why it is called 15+ Creative Ways to Paint with Toddlers.
