This month we are spotlighting Dr. Seuss for our Virtual Book Club for Kids. Dr. Seuss writes simple books that include silly words and phrases, lots of rhyming, vivid illustrations, and simple text. My kids love most books by Dr. Seuss, so it was tough to pick which one we wanted to share with you today.
After a lot of thinking, we decided to read The Foot Book and share a simple baking soda/vinegar activity with you!
Baking soda and vinegar are staples at our house. We buy the huge containers of them at Costco. There is something so refreshing and exciting about vinegar/baking soda reactions... especially when you add a little food coloring and some new props.
The Foot Book is a book all about feet... so we started off this activity by going on a hunt for feet! We hunted around the house for toys that had lots of different types of feet.
Once we had gathered several toys with feet, we set up our Fizzy Footprint station and then we counted feet. The ponies had four feet, the octopus had eight legs, goofy had two feet, the cow had four feet, and the astronaut had two feet. My toddler just learned to count to five, so this exercise was good review for her!
Supplies Needed: baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, stirrer, droppers, pie pan, little cups, toys/action figures with feet, and paper towels.
Once materials are all set up, pour vinegar into little cups and mix food coloring into each cup so that you have several colors to use. Also, make sure to put the baking soda in a pan or on a plate.
Practice showing your kids how to squeeze the droppers without touching the baking soda (though sucking up baking soda is also fun to do).
To make fizzy footprints, stick some animals into a pan covered with baking soda. Use the dropper and squeeze colored vinegar onto the feet of each of the toys. The vinegar will fizz once it touches the baking soda! (It is fun to survey your kids ahead of time to ask what they think will happen when you drop the vinegar on the feet).
Once the fizziness stops, carefully pick up each of your animals and talk about the footprints that they left. Count the footprints, talk about their size/shape, and talk about the colors and textures you see.
Then put the toys back down in the baking soda, grab some more vinegar, and start the activity over again. Plan to do this activity again and again and again. The colors are exciting to watch and the fizziness never gets old.
If you have lots of dinosaurs lying around your house then you could try making Fizzy Dino Tracks as well.

Just saw your fizzy footprint post on And Next Comes L. I'm always looking for activities I can do with my 3.5 year old AND 8 year old and this looks like one they can both enjoy. Thanks for sharing!

I, unfortunately, seem to be a month behind! We had a great time with Dr. Suess, just didn't get a chance to link up. Here is our link, though.

Does the food coloring stain the feet of the toys?
Kristina says
I ran the toys through the dishwasher afterwards and nothing was stained. I also didn't leave them submerged in the color for a lengthy period of time. Thanks for stopping by to ask a question.

Thanks! I'm thinking about doing this at school. I didn't want to ruin any school toys!

I highly recommend always testing things out ahead of time though before you do them with a class! So try it out first to make sure if works with your specific toys.

I didn't know this book of Dr Seuss and I'm glad I discovered it. We have French books of Dr Seuss' books and unfortunately , they didn't translate this one 🙁 Will check at our local library 🙂 Loved the activity!

Wow – what a creative way to apply this book! I NEVER would have thought to do something like this, and yet, it is something I know my kids would absolutely love. (They love bringing their toys into the kitchen!) We will definitely be trying this!
