Need an easy Halloween treat to make with kids? These spooky brownie houses are sure to be a hit!

Halloween is a great time to do simple baking projects with kids. Not only can you enjoy time together, but you can sneak in a little learning as well. Baking introduces kids to counting, measuring, and following directions! I love making simple Halloween desserts with kids and then watching one of our favorite spooky movies while we wait for them to bake.

Baking together is also a great way to build your child's language skills and develop your relationship too!

Here are the instructions for making this easy Halloween treat!

WHAT YOU NEED:

• 2 Brownie mixes (We love the Ghirardelli mix from Costco)
• Greased cookie sheet (baking pan with an edge aka jelly roll pan)
• Plastic knife
• White icing you can pipe/use for decorating
• Candy toppings (candy corn, marshmallows, smarties, skittles, etc.)
• Little bowls for the candies

HOW TO MAKE BROWNIE HOUSES:

• Follow the ingredients on the box to mix up the brownie batter.
• Grease the baking pan.
• Set the oven for whatever temperature the brownie box says.
• Pour the brownie batter into the baking pan and smooth it out flat.

• Bake the brownies until they are firm and not gooey in the middle. Approximately 30-35 minutes. Test to see if they are done by sticking a fork into the brownies. If the fork comes out clean, they are ready to come out of the oven.
• Let the brownies cool and then slice them into triangles and rectangles using a plastic knife. 
• Place one triangle and one rectangle on each plate to make a house.

• Grab your favorite white icing and pipe a border and windows and doors onto the brownie house.

• Next give kids each some candy to start decorating their spooky brownie houses!

Some kids will want to carefully and creatively decorate their spooky brownie houses while other kids will want to pile the candy in high and only focus on how much they can fit on the house!

Making easy Halloween treats is so much fun! This can also be such simple language activity for kids! 

As kids create, they talk about colors, shapes, positions of candy decorations, etc. They also take turns with materials and use social skills to talk and negotiate.
