- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- A few jars (or cups)
- A cup for vinegar
- Jumbo droppers (or pipettes)
- Food coloring
- Glitter (we like this bio-degradable glitter)
- Craft tray (or baking pan)
** I love using clear cups so that you can see what's happening during the eruptions, but any cup will work!
It's so easy, big kids can even set this up themselves!
Fizzy Eruptions Science Experiment Instructions:
1. Place some food coloring and glitter at the bottom of each jar or cup.
2. Fill the jars/cups with 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda.
3. Fill a larger cup with vinegar.
4. Give your child a jumbo dropper and show them how to squeeze vinegar up into the dropper and squeeze it back out onto the baking soda.
5. Watch what happens!
This festive fizzy activity can be used for celebrations on the 4th of July or New Year's Eve or just any time during the year when you want to make the day extra fun.
Recommended age for this activity?
Each child is different! We start doing fizzy science activities with toddlers around age 2 but using a jumbo dropper or pipette is easy for some and harder for others depending on their fine motor skills development. Some kids just enjoy pouring the vinegar instead of using a dropper.
If you're not sure if your child is ready for something, just try it out!
If they're not ready for it, just try again in a few weeks or months. Kids develop so quickly during the toddler and preschooler stages that one month they might not be ready for something and the next month they are!
Why use a cup instead of just putting the baking soda all over the tray?
We love all things fizzy. Our baking soda science sensory bin is pretty the easiest thing you can ever set up. We do this in sensory bins and large kiddie pools ALL THE TIME. If you haven't tried it yet, start there.
Sometimes though, it's fun to change things up a bit and take it up a notch. Not only is this science experiment fizzy, but the vinegar and baking soda explodes out of the jar and onto the tray.
It's like a volcano, without the mess of needing to build a paper mache or playdough volcano.
I promise your kids will LOVE it. You probably will do.
We love to repeat this again... and again... and again!
Want to repeat it? Just add more baking soda to the jars.
Want to make the fizz even cooler? Add some Dawn dish soap and see what happens.
